All through life you hear, that education is important. Advanced technology is making education more important. To excel in a career, you must pursue as much education as possible. If you desire to be a certified public accountant, you must take accounting and financial courses. In addition, you must pass a test to show you are qualified to be a CPA. If you want to be a plumber, you must spend time as an apprentice. As the apprentice puts time in on the job and hours of studying, he progresses in his trade and takes various examinations to become a journeyman plumber. No matter what field you enter, education is important and will help you progress in your chosen field.

If you are working as a CPA, plumber, or in any field you have displayed three attributes. The first is intelligence, which is the ability to learn. Knowledge is the information you acquire. Wisdom is putting that knowledge into action.

How much time are you putting into your spiritual education? Are you studying God's word to learn and grow closer to Him? Are you living the way He wants you to live?

In Deuteronomy 6:6-9, God instructed Moses to tell the Israelites to keep His commands in front of them at all times. God's commands should dwell at the center of every thought, word, and deed you have. God wanted the Israelites to talk about His laws and pass them on to their children. What they passed on was more than information. They were passing on an education that was life-oriented. The Israelites used the circumstances in daily living to teach about God. They wanted their children to look for God in every area of life.

Your life takes on new meaning when you educate yourself about God and incorporate His teachings into your life. You begin to live the way He wants you to live. At work, you become better stewards of your job. You have a new employer. You are following in the footsteps of Jesus and glorifying God. Throughout the day, you may be the only bible people will see or hear.

When a situation crops up at work and you are not sure how to handle it, you seek the advice of someone who does. Do you refer to the bible and educate yourself to find out how God wants you to handle situations. Your trust and faith will mature the more you know and obey God's commands.

At times with the education and the experience, you have, you may hold back on a project. Where is your focus? Is it on your weakness? God looks at your problems differently. If your weakness is involved in what God wants you to do then He will provide the education and resources needed to get the job done. Evidence of this is found in Exodus 4:12 God said to Moses, "Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say."

It's easy to forget that we don't know everything. Only God knows everything. Remembering this fact is an education in itself. When you are in alignment with God, you can receive His power and use it to carry out His purpose. Living God's way opens the door for the Holy Spirit to shine through you. You do not have to live on your own strength. Use God's power to obey, trust, and live out His commands. That is the greatest education you can achieve in life.

Character Education Programs For Academic Success and Play

Our children will be returning to days of regimented learning when they return to school next week. Unlike previous years, Lela won't be learning Mandarain, Spanish, theater or knitting. After school, she'll probably walk home, perhaps with friends from her neighborhood, and play and relax.

During the last twenty years, our kids have been robbed of at least eight hours of leisurely, spontaneous and unstructured play time every week. Compared to children from sixty years ago, it's fairly obvious that our children's ability to regulate their own behavior, control their impulses and understand their emotions is much worse. Studies have shown an alarming trend in self-regulation; our five-year-olds behave like 1940's three-year-olds, and our seven-year-olds have the same emotional capacity as five-year-olds from that same period.

Unstructured recreation, led by children, add to a child's emotional health, as well as their social, physical and intellectual skills. Unstructured play can teach children to successfully work in groups, as well as how to negotiate, resolve conflicts, share, speak up, and regulate their own behavior and emotions. Another study has revealed that children who attend traditional, academic preschools do not have an educational advantage in reading or math over children who attended preschools that focused on play - but they did have elevated test anxiety, decreased creativity, and more negative feelings about school than children who attended play-based preschools.

By allowing your children to lead their own play, and not questioning the roles that they assume or the structure of their games, we don't have to worry about dominating their play experiences. Unless your children are being unfriendly, don't attempt to correct their methods of play. Remove yourself from the immediate situation if you find yourself expressing frustration or disdain for the ways that your children choose to play, and allow your child the free play time. It is important to let them lead, and still spend time doing things that you both enjoy.

In my personal experience, rough-housing with my kids really increases our connection. I tend to skip participating in their make-believe play, because it's difficult for me to enjoy, and I become bored. History doesn't show us many examples of parents playing with their children, and even 75% of the world would find it unnatural for a child and parent to play together on the floor. Once your kids reach the age of four or five, it's completely normal for parents to step back from their children's play and let them control it for themselves. This is how children learn to get along with their peers, and how to entertain themselves. A kid with an imaginary friend isn't troubled or crazy; actually, studies have shown that these kids are more apt to interact, laugh and smile in social situations.

By projecting their own personalities and interacting with plush creatures with pretend personalities, kids develop the necessary skills to focus on their relationships with other kids. Pretend play with a group of children can stimulate intellectual and social skills in children, which subsequently helps them in school. 30 minutes is the minimum amount of time that kids should play. It's even better to let this play last several hours. Instead of using manufactured toys for props, encourage children to substitute common objects in their play, such as sticks for wands, and boxes for houses or cars. It's unfortunate, but there aren't many neighborhoods where a child under ten can walk the dog without a parent. We're not doing what we should as a society by allowing unmoderated play disappear from out children's lives; we value play less because of academics that take over our children's lives, but we need to protect and implement play for all of our children.

Small things like words can have a big impact no matter what age we are. Emotional literacy through character education programs & exercises with an exercise in happiness helps children identify and deal with their own emotions as well as others.

My friend Richard is a Licensed Practical Nurse who recently decided he wanted to go back and earn his RN degree and pursue more challenging, specialized fields in the nursing arena. On-Campus And Online Education Programs Innovate With Grant Funding

Nursing programs, environmental research, special needs, and arts students have something in common. They are a few of the beneficiaries of grants that have been provided this year to colleges and universities. Students might not feel all of the effects of grants directly. However, millions of dollars in grant money has this year benefited institutes of higher learning; initiatives that often involve students. A few of these grants and initiatives include:

Grace College: This Winona Lake, Indiana, college has received a $5 million National Science Foundation grant. The grant money is to be applied to researching the effects of climate change on Great Lakes water quality. The money is to be provided to Grace College in yearly installments of $75,000 over the course of five years, according to Dr. Nate Bosch, an environmental biology professor and director of Kosciusko Lakes and Streams, a Grace College community water quality program.

Harding University: This Searcy, Arizona, university has received $3,500 grant from a major insurance company. The funds, awarded to Harding' Cannon-Clary College of Education and the Arkansas Teachers for National Board Certification, is to be applied to a Harding University hosted Arkansas Teachers for National Board Certification conference that's scheduled for January 2011. It's to help pay for events, as well as keynote speaker Dr. Jerry Parks, a middle school teacher of social studies who was inducted into the Teacher Hall of Fame in 2009.

Kent State University: This Kent, Ohio, university has received a $1 million US Department of Energy grant. These funds is to be dispersed over the course of three years. It's to benefit studies related to the storage and release of carbons.

Loyola University: This New Orleans, Louisiana, university has received a $1 million-plus Health Resources and Services Administration grant. Issued to benefit a new nursing degree by paying in part for the faculty and staff needed to run it. Loyola University plans to launch the online degree, which is a doctor of nursing, in 2013.

Marygrove College: This Detroit, Michigan, college has received a $20,000 Erb Foundation grant. Student participation in an Institute of Music and Dance at Marygrove College will benefit from this award. Provided to Marygrove College in two $10,000 annual installments, the monies are to pay for scholarships for students participating in the school's art, dance, music and theater classes.

Marylhurst University: This Marylhurst, Oregon, university has received a $75,000 Oregon Community Foundation grant. The money, provided through the foundation's Sande Emmy Fund, is to benefit a music therapy program. Marylhurst University students as part of what's known as Creative Arts Therapies for Kids, or CATs 4 Kids, work with special needs children.

Grants that are provided to colleges and universities can go a long way not only toward helping students who study there, but toward helping the community at large. Some might feel the immediate benefits in their ability to participate in college and university studies. In the long-term, grants such as these might benefit the environment, the health of others and more.

Normally, when students think of awarded money for school it's after they've done a search for online grant and scholarship funds that might apply to their personal needs. While this benefits the individual student, the grants issued to institutions benefit traditional and online education needs for a great many future career professionals.

Don't Shy Away From Special Education Programs For Your Child

If your child has special needs or a disability, special education may help your child succeed in school and in life. However, many parents fear that their child will be singled out for special education classes in a room separate from their classmates, so they avoid seeking out special education arrangements.

While this was the case at one time, current special education laws require schools to provide an educational environment that is as unrestrictive and equal for all children as possible.

Are you unsure whether your child qualifies for special education? Do you wonder if special education services would help your child succeed in school? The definitions of eligible disabilities have been greatly expanded to include learning disabilities and emotional challenges as well as physical disabilities.

Some of these definitions are set by the states, and the federal government decides some. Regardless of what type of disability your child has, special education is the best way to ensure that your child is getting the education that your child deserves.

Without special education services, your child may be at a disadvantage. Even with a caring and patient teacher, many children find themselves unable to keep up with their peers in the classroom.

Setting out a clear and fair special education plan will give you, your child and the school the assurance that appropriate measures are being taken on your child's behalf in the classroom. These may include additional time with a teacher or special education facilitator, physical accommodations, or any other reasonable accommodation that the school is able to offer.

When seeking special education arrangements for your child, your first step will be to obtain an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for him. An IEP should be developed for each child with any disability and is the single most important piece of documentation in your quest for equal education for your child. It outlines goals and objectives for the student, along with a description of which accommodations will be necessary to facilitate those objectives.

The IEP process begins when you or your child's teacher notice that the child is struggling in school. The concerned party will request a referral for special education services, which typically will result in an evaluation by a committee comprised of school faculty and you. The evaluation will determine whether your child's disabilities interfere with his educational experience. If so, an IEP will be developed.

When the IEP is in place, your child will have access to the special education services covered by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Under IDEA, your child is entitled to an education equivalent to that of a child without disabilities in the least restrictive environment possible.

The Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) mandate is the result of many years of studies. The conclusion of these studies was that special needs children are better served in the classroom with their peers than in a segregated classroom environment. The practices of pull-out programs, separate "special-ed" rooms, and the stigma of being a "special-ed kid" have changed radically in the past decade.

Children are now encouraged to flourish first in the regular classroom, with accommodations and modifications if necessary. If it becomes clear that this setup is not in the best interest of the child, the school or the parent may request a re-evaluation of the situation.

Recent studies have proven beyond a doubt that children with disabilities have more opportunities to thrive when they are educated in the same environment as non-disabled children. Observing and interacting with other children helps students with disabilities to maintain a sense of normalcy and develop their social skills. An inclusive classroom, one that includes special needs and non-special needs students, can also help the non-special needs students develop valuable social skills.

By taking down the barriers between disabled students and non-disabled students, IDEA has made the special education environment a more nurturing and beneficial place for your child to receive the education your child is entitled to. There is no longer any need to be nervous about the negative impact that special education will have on your child because the process has been refined to be as positive as possible.

The special education environment found in schools today is one that provides an improved learning experience for your child. With the help of supplemental support staff and special training for classroom teachers, your child's school can provide the type of environment that makes it possible for him to thrive and to achieve all that your child is capable of achieving.

Understanding How a Distance Education Program Works

Students had to attend classes at a university to get credit once upon a time. If you had a time conflict, or the university was far away, you missed out. Now distance education has changed all of this. Distance education is also sometimes called distance learning, and it involves getting educational materials to students who aren't physically attending a course. The education is offered via technology or correspondence.

Students in far-flung corners of the globe can now get an education thanks to distance learning. In fact, the University of South Africa, established in 1946, is one of the oldest distance education universities.

Individual distance education classes and programs have been around for far longer. Distance education can be traced back to Sir Issac Pitman, who also invented shorthand. Pittman thought it might be useful to offer courses via the mail. The idea was adapted by the University of Chicago in the early 1900s; they began what is likely the first department for correspondence courses. It was not the last such department. The idea caught on and other universities followed suit.

There were only a few countries where distance learning was a major component of the educational system, however, until 1969. This changed when the United Kingdom started the Open University. This changed distance education radically and encouraged other similar universities to be founded.

Today, we have distance education that would have seemed like a dream to these earlier departments. Students can get materials via podcast, webcast, videoconferencing, satellite broadcast, email, CD-ROM, and broadband to name just a few.

We can even use a virtual classroom to deliver materials. This means that a teacher gives a lecture in one classroom and it is broadcast via teleconference to students in other classrooms as well. Students benefit from remote technology in many ways. They can also get online video materials and course materials, chat with tutors online, email instructors, and so on.

Distance learning programs are thriving in the United States. You can find them now in nonprofit and for-profit businesses of both private and public sectors.

It is still quite expensive to offer distance learning, however. Still, with technology becoming more reasonable over time, the possibilities for this type of learning to be used more widely are quite good.

Having a central point to review schools online can significantly help anyone researching education via the Web. It can be the fundamental difference.

Say someone is looking for radiology technician schools they can attend online (such schools do exist). A prospective student would want to know: which of these schools are up on the latest technologies; which ones actually have doctors or other medical professionals on staff rather than would-be professors who were delivering pizzas a few weeks before; and which of the schools provide a realistic chance at a job in health care or least a reasonable career search when all the classes are done. After all, an education is a career finder, perhaps as much as anything else. Getting Important Methodologies Like ABA in Your Child's Special Education Program

Are you the parent of a young child with autism that thinks that your child needs an applied behavioral analysis (ABA)program? Are you the parent of a child with dyslexia or other learning disabilities who thinks that your child needs an Orton-Gillingham Based multisensory reading program? Would you like to learn how to advocate for these particular methodologies for your child? This article will discuss what methodology means, and information that you can use to advocate for the appropriate methodology for your child.

Methodology means the specific curriculum or program that special education personnel are going to use, to teach your child. Some of the most popular methodologies for teaching children are ABA (for children with autism) or an Orton-Gillingham based multisensory reading program for children with dyslexia or other reading disabilities.

Many special education personnel continue to tell parents that they have no right to tell them what methodology to use. Below are 4 points that you can make with school personnel to get the methodology that your child needs in order to benefit from their education.

1. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004 states under 300.26 that: special education means specially designed instruction means adapting as appropriate to the needs of the eligible child . . .the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction.

This section is one of the most important clarifications in the IDEA law. It
gives parents the right to discuss the content, methodology and delivery of education to their child. The discussion of methodology is important for all children but especially those children with autism or language based learning disabilities.

2. In a recent court case entitled KL vs. Mercer Island School District found that: The particular teaching methodology that will be used. . .will need to be discussed at the IEP meeting and incorporated into the student's IEP.

3. Another court case the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois discussed methodology in the case of TH vs. Palatine School District. The court held that the school's argument that it had the right to choose methodology was not valid since the school district had no methodology. The US Supreme Court decision in Rowley could only apply if the school had chosen and implemented a methodology calculated to allow the child to make meaningful progress.

4. There is no legal basis for school districts decision to not discuss or specify the methodology in a child's IEP! School districts position on this contradicts common sense. IDEA regulations require that the IEP should include related services and supplementary aids and supports to be provided to the child, and a statement of the program, modifications or supports. It is mind blowing that school districts take the position that it should specify the supports and modifications which may be dependent on the methodology, but not specify the methodology.

If you feel that your child needs a particular methodology in order to benefit from their education, bring it up at an IEP meeting. If the IEP team feels that they do not have to put the methodology in your child's IEP, bring up all of the 4 points above! Put special emphasis on the wording of IDEA which does include the word methodologies. You may have to fight for a particular methodology that your child needs, but it will be well worth it!

First off the amount of Universities in West Virginia is astounding. You will find Masters Degree programs in cities ranging anywhere from Philippi, WV, all the way to Buckhannon, WV. There really is no best way to decide on what college is right for you and I felt like it was something left up to the reader to decide for themselves. There are 4 different mindsets people use to make decisions like these, and in this article I really have no way to try and persuade you to go to any one school. So with that being said lets get into what schools are in the West Virginia area and then maybe later on you will have a better idea on where you think would be a good place to get educated.

Starting from A to Z and this certainly isn't a complete list of schools, but from the research I have gathered at this time it seems to be a nice start:

First there is the Alderson Broaddus College, and they are located in the city of Philippi WV. How to Avoid a Fake ABA Special Education Program For Your Child With Autism

Do you have a child with autism that is receiving special education services? Did you know that Applied Behavioral Analysis, is the research based educational treatment, for autism? Did you know that if ABA starts at age 3 by age 7 many children are able to be mainstreamed, have a more productive life, and save society money? Would you like to know, how to avoid a "fake" ABA program that will not educationally benefit your child? This article will discuss several ways to avoid, agreeing to an ABA program, that is not being done in a correct manner, to the detriment of your child.

1. Avoid a fake program, by making sure that any program that special education personnel want to use for your child, is developed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The professional should have a masters or a doctorate degree; and ask for written proof of this. The person also must have over one hundred hours of specific course work and thousands of hours of supervised experience. The program is individualized for each child with autism, and will not be effective if it is not developed by a trained person.

2. Avoid a fake program, by making sure that the professional person that develops the program also has experience working with children with autism. The program will be more effective, if the professional person developing it, has experience working with many children with different types of autism.

3. Avoid a fake program, by ensuring that the ratio is 1-1; which is 1 adult to 1 child; any other ratio is not the correct way to do the program. Many schools say they have ABA programs, but the ratios are 4 students to 1 adult; not the way ABA is carried out. If the program is not done on a 1 to 1 basis, your child will not be getting the most benefit from the program.

4. Avoid a fake program, by ensuring that your child receives a minimum of 25 hours per week or a maximum of 40 hours per week. Many disability organizations estimate that a 40 hour week costs approximately $50,000 a year per child. If your school district wants to give your child 2 hours of ABA a day, tell them that ABA must be given a minimum of 25 hours a week, and you will accept no less. One way that special education personnel try and save money, is to offer the appropriate interventions, but not for the effective amount of time.

5. Avoid a fake program, by making sure that the instruction uses discrete trial training, which is the main component of the program.

6. Avoid a fake program, by making sure that the teacher assistant that is carrying out the program, has received extensive training from a professional with a Masters or Doctorate in ABA; and works under the supervision of the professional. The professional, should also meet with the teacher's assistant on a regular basis, to see how the child is progressing, and if the program needs to be changed.

Why is it important to make sure that the ABA program your child receives will bring the maximum benefit? A study that was done in 1998 Entitled: Cost benefit estimates for early intensive behavioral intervention for young children with autism shows that If a child receives ABA between the ages of 2 and school entry the cost savings range from $187,000 to $203,000 per child for ages 3-21. Also the cost savings is from $656,000 to$1,082,000 per child from ages 3-55 years.

It is not only in your child's best interest to receive an appropriately developed ABA program, but it is in societies also. Advocate for an effective program that is going to benefit your child, for the rest of their life.

Learning Objectives For a Solid Music Education Program - Learning Music Theory

A solid Music Education program trains its students in understanding Music Theory. Music Theory is important because it is the key to analyzing music and good musicians should have this ability. Understanding the structure of music is laying the foundation for new music to be created. For instance, knowing the major and minor scales, on which music of the Western Hemisphere is based, helps students to understand the make-up of a composition which can lead students to compose their own music.

In order to play an instrument or sing, there are basic skills all music students must know. One particular skill is playing or singing major and minor scales. In order to do this, the key signature of each scale must be known. The following is a diagram that illustrates the major keys that contain sharps. This diagram provides students with a method of learning the number of sharps in a key in numerical order.

By reading this diagram in order, students will see the close relationship one key has with the next key. For instance, "C" major, having no sharps or flats, is closely related to "G" major since "G" major has only one sharp. However, "C" major is not closely related to "E" major because "E" major has four sharps. Knowing the relationship between keys is important for ear training purposes so students can hear as well as see how music is structured and then progresses into new music.

Once the major keys that contain sharps are learned, then the major scales with sharps can be learned vocally or on an instrument. Next, the major keys and scales that contain flats, the minor keys and scales that contain sharps then the minor keys and scales that contain flats should be introduced in that order.

A strong Music Education program trains its students to read and understand music notation and note values. Teaching music notation in both, the treble and bass clef using different note values and time signatures is significant because it promotes good ear training, sight singing/reading and rhythm for both, vocal and instrumental students. Playing and singing by ear is an excellent skill to posses but reading music notation while playing an instrument or singing, takes a musician to a higher level of understanding music. Also, it opens the doors to pathways not travelled by musicians who can't read music notation.

For instance, if a musician is hired to perform at an event that has a specific theme (wedding, funeral, luncheon, etc.), chances are, if there no recordings for the music to be performed, sheet music can be followed in order to play or sing the songs. Also, if a musician chooses to audition for a position as a choir member, director, or accompanist, the music to be sung or played can be learned at a much faster pace when two senses (hearing and sight) are relied upon rather, only, one (hearing). Not to mention most professional choirs require its members, directors and accompanists to read music notation in order to accomplish the desired results.

The information stated above is not, by any means, an indictment on musicians who do not read music. In fact, there are some excellent accomplished musicians who choose not to learn music notation. However, the ones I've come in contact with are exceptional. They are very gifted individuals in their area of musical expertise who remained focused and driven to achieve the high goals they had set, and continue to set for themselves. Unless a budding musician is on this level, it is strongly suggested that music students embrace the art of reading music notation.

Effectiveness of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program (DARE)

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program (DARE) was created to be implemented in school systems in order to educate students about the dangers of drug and alcohol use and abuse. It was intended to help decrease the amount of young kids and teens that would experiment with drugs by educating them on the negative side effects of drug use.

While the general public may feel that DARE is a great program, and the leaders that run it also believe in its powerfulness, there have been a lot of studies that show a different result. Actually, some empirical studies that have been completed on the program show that it is completely ineffective. This information can be very difficult for many individuals to deal with because there are a lot of people that feel the program is effective. These same people do not want to hear about scientific studies that claim the program is ineffective. They often feel the need to look at surveys completed by the participants that report that they learned something and that they were satisfied with the program. However, these surveys do not show the program is effective and that is what matters, is it not?

Character Education Programs Must Have a Foundation of Respect

While conducting my latest three-hour Character Education - Teachers & Staff Development Class in a small school district in Texas, I began by asking the staff to discuss why Character Education is important in Texas schools. Over the last few years I have received the same type of answers - "kids are not being taught values (some teachers mention basic courtesy,) any more", "kids are meaner to each other today", "parents are not involved in the child's life", and other very similar responses to these.

In this last class, when I asked "What particular value do you see is most needed in your students?" three people responded at the same time, "Respect". What an unambiguous indication of what this Texas District needed most!

This reminds me of an article I wrote recently on my Building Good Citizens for Texas website regarding Hal Urban. A comment from Dr. Urban was highlighted in that column - "What we accept, we teach!" As we continued to talk about the reasons for the lack of respect in this Texas district, it became clear that although teachers were working very hard to instill respect, students were just not being required to strive for those high standards teachers expected and wanted from them.

High expectation is a critical piece of the character education framework. Encouraging respect between teachers and students and among the students themselves is an important step in teaching all of the other character traits we wish to instill, such as honesty and loyalty.

Harry Wong, a very successful teacher, as well as author and presenter on Classroom Management, told of a six-year old student who said to him, "My teacher thought I was smarter than I was, so I was!" How is that for high expectations met? Can we correlate high expectations by the teacher to higher academic achievement? Many experts would agree that, yes we can!

The basis for a good Character education program is having high and consistent expectations that our students will do what is right. We have an important duty to help each and every student to know what the correct decision is and then make that right choice a habit. We must expect that all teachers, students and the property within our responsibility are treated with respect. That expectation of respect must become a habit. A critical piece of forming that habit of respect in the students is our own modeling of respect, by treating each one of our fellow teachers and students with respect in kind. Yes, even when correcting or imposing consequences, we must do so with respect.

1. Identify the development needs. Boil it down to the top three development needs, or in other words, "what are you trying to get from a program?" Typical answers are "learn how to be more strategic", "leading change", or some combination of functional knowledge (finance, sales, and marketing). There may be is a timeframe that's better or worse than others (i.e., next 6 months, avoid the summer, etc...)

2. Search your favorite executive education providers. Mine are listed on the left on my blog. These are programs I've used and have gotten positive feedback; they are also rated favorably by Business Week and the Financial Times. I start with The Center for Creative Leadership and Darden for leadership, Chicago's GSB for sales and marketing, Wharton and Chicago for finance, Harvard and Stanford for strategy, UCLA and CCL for non-majority programs, etc....

3. Once you find a couple potential programs, look for a good fit. Look at the recommended participant level, participant mix, industry mix, and company participation.

4. Check out the instructors, read the bios. Review the day by day agenda, topics, and activities. Again, you're looking for a good fit for the participant and his/her development needs. Talk to the provider's Exec Ed Director, or someone who can help you learn more about the programs.
Ask other's if they have experience with the program.

5. Talk to past participants if possible, or someone in charge of leadership/executive development development.

6. Geography can sometimes be a factor. Looking for a global experience? Than look for a good mix of global participants, or better yet, attend a program outside the U.S. Insead, IMD, and the London School of business are all excellent European choices. I've not found much in South America or Asia, but many of the top US programs now take place in Asia. If you want to network for some high tech leaders, then go to Silicon Valley (Berkeley, Stanford).

7. Length of program: Programs range anywhere from 2-3 days to 6 weeks. I honestly don't know how someone could afford to go to a 6 week program these days, unless they are on a sabbatical or their company is just trying to get rid of them for a while. I've found you need at least a week to have a true immersion experience. Some of those deep "ahas" don't happen until the 4th or 5th day. Two weeks seems to be perfect, with an opportunity to explore and recharge on weekends.

8. Check out the amenities'. All right, I know, this is a learning experience and not a vacation, but top notch food, accommodations, and surroundings all are part of the total experience. All of the schools on my list cater to executives - this actually ends up being a driver of participant satisfaction and the school's program rankings. Also see if the room and meals are included in the program.

9. Factors that should not be a part of a decision: alumni relationships, timing coinciding with the NCAA playoffs, and catchy program titles.

10. After all of this, narrow it down to 2-3 program, and then select based on best fit, timing, and costs.

These are often once in a life time experiences for most leaders. University executive education programs are a big investment, usually in the $7,000 - $40,000 price range. Clear your work and personal calendars, and immerse yourself in the week. This is a time to be 100% selfish, and focus on nothing but your own development as a leader. Moving Into Or Out of a Career - Why an Educational Program May Waste Time

After ten years as a manager, "Elise" felt stuck. Her bosses kept telling her, "We can't promote you until you take more courses in finance." Elise took three finance courses and aced them. Her managers responded, "Now you need to take some marketing." Two courses later, Elise began to wonder, "Am I wasting my time?"

Elise's story is based on a true conversation, although the details are disguised. After we talked awhile, she said, "I think I need a new job - not more school." She was probably right.

Education has helped many mid-life, mid-career executives and professionals who want to change careers. I've met dozens of managers who used education for networking. Others acquire skills that moved their resumes past the slush pile, right to the inboxes of hiring managers. However, choices have to be made carefully.

-- Before beginning an educational program, talk to at least six people who have graduated in the last year. Older graduates entered a different market.

-- Talk to recent graduates who resemble you as much as possible. If you're in your forties or fifties, you probably can expect different outcomes than a twenty-something.

-- Ask those graduates for a "before and after" scenario. "I worked for X company in a field I like. Now I work I still work for that company but now I have earned a promotion." If you are considering a career change, your degree will play a very different role in your career. Some degree programs work well for a promotion in the same company, but will not help you gain credibility to start a new career in a new field.

-- Recognize that degree programs differ dramatically in reputation as well as requirements. Most advisors will tell you to choose an accredited university or program. However, unless you dig deeply, it's hard to tell whether a particular university's accreditation has meaning in the marketplace. Instead, talk to prospective employers and clients to learn which programs they value. Don't be surprised if they discourage you from taking certain steps.

-- Be skeptical of programs that seem too eager to recruit you or too easy once you get in. If all you need is a credit card, you won't gain prestige from graduation. If most students get straight-As, future employers won't place value on your degree. One employer told me, "I can't say anything about graduates of that University. Some are really good and some are terrible. I think it's because they accept everyone and give only good grades."

Green collar jobs are all the rage today. If the term green is a bit mystifying, it's a step up from blue, but just not white yet. Latent Biases in Autism Educational Programs and Their Effect on Development

In matters concerning the capabilities of those on the autism spectrum, the vast degree of variation in these individuals makes it difficult (or impossible) to design an 'all encompassing' educational program. The amount of time and energy involved in designing, manufacturing and advertising a product, is inherently counterintuitive to this reality. I can tell you that it is very challenging to handle the numerous issues which arise from creating and producing a product for mass consumption. This being the case, many products are, therefore related to a specific learning group which may represent a certain segment of the autistic community.

Many students with autism will respond well to typical materials, yet require specialized instructional techniques to help them be successful. Others will benefit from a complete redesign of the teaching materials. Still other students with autism may require minute changes to the curriculum or the environment to help them understand. When one comes to terms with this reality, there truly is no individual technique or approach that would benefit the entire spectrum of individuals with autism; but this is not how autism related products are sold or promoted.

It may be too hard in certain cases and many times it is - yet they all deserve the chance to try.

A particularly frustrating example of this recently came to my attention. A certain 'system' of instruction I found which claimed that, "This autistic piano education program uses 'play by ear' techniques and bypasses teaching students how to read musical notes." For those of you unfamiliar with note reading and playing by ear, I will give a brief explanation. Traditionally, all students of music are taught to read musical notation for several reasons, including; having the ability generalize this knowledge to other instruments, play more and more complex pieces, and fine tune spatial comprehension and processing skills. Playing the piano by ear is also a skill typically taught to most students in addition to reading, as a way to help better understand tonalities and basic song structure.

Making these decisions ahead of time... is tantamount to discrimination and should be reviewed very carefully.

The reason this raised a red flag for me, is simply that - why should we ever assume that a child with autism can't read musical notes! Yes, it may be relatively more difficult for them and yes the attempt may even at some point fail, but this should not predetermine their chances of success! Those of us who work with or provide care for individuals with autism already understand this. Assumptions made on any individual's ability level will most likely waste time and is probably a biased conclusion. I do not believe these, in my view unethical, programs are developed with malice - rather, it is more a lack of fundamental knowledge of special education, the autism community and basic scientific theory in general which allows programs such as this to take shape. While these programs are, no doubt, a result of teachers doing their best to educate the autism community, withholding these educational practices (for whatever reason) is counterproductive in my view and speaks more to the need to educate the population in general of just what these students are capable of!

When I think back on all of the relative leaps and bounds made by my students in the area of reading musical notation, it is troubling to consider that other instructors may have 'bypassed' this because it seemed too hard for them. It may be too hard in certain cases and many times it is - yet they all deserve the chance to try. A simple and objective analysis of their performance over time will clearly indicate whether or not the approach at teaching reading music is working and decisions can be made how best to proceed at that point. Making these decisions ahead of time, before even any teaching has taken place, is tantamount to discrimination and should be reviewed very carefully by consumers and educators.

Five Fun Educational Programs

This is a list of five educational programs that can be a lot of fun. Educational programs aren't just for kids, people of all ages can enjoy these programs and enjoy learning new information. Here are five programs that in my opinion you should download. They are in no particular order.

1. Seterra

This is a fun little program. Seterra has many different exercises for learning geography. For instance, there are quizzes on country capitals, state capitals, major cities, country flags, mountains and volcanos, etc.

My personal favorite exercise is where you try to identify numerous countries by clicking on a blank map. It's a great way to get good at identifying countries.

In addition, this program also keeps track of high scores, so you can compete against family and friends. And best of all... it's totally free!

2. Google Earth

This is a program that a lot of people have heard of. But I had to put it here because if you have not used this program, seriously, try it out! Google Earth is an absolutely amazing program full of lots of information. And there is so much information constantly being added.

With Google Earth, you can view satellite maps of the world. But it's not just that, you can see pictures all over the world (some of them 360 views), links to youtube videos, links to wikipedia entries, traffic conditions, etc. etc. etc.

Seriously... In the time it would take for me to explain what all Google Earth has, you could have already downloaded it. Just go download it.

3. Real Lives

This is a fun little program. Basically... you get to live the life of a person in the world. You can pick the country and create your character, or have your character randomly picked.

To some, this may sound a lot like the Sims, but it isn't like the Sims at all. In Real Lives you can't actually see your character. You don't control his daily actions. Each turn simulates one year. But you can pick your characters career, hobbies, finances, relationships, etc.

Where the educational value comes in is how much you learn from trying to have your character succeed in various countries. The country you live in will really affect how your character does. For example, in the past I have had characters in the United States who did really well career wise. I've had other characters in Africa that died in the first few years from disease. I've also had characters that were involved in social activism that were executed in various countries with dictators. Like I said, the country your character lives in will affect a lot how they live, and in the process you learn a lot about how people live around the world.

The only downside to this program is that it is only free to try. Unless you buy it, there is an opening screen with a delay. But I still recommend checking it out. And want a challenge? Try creating a character in a country like Somalia and getting them to live till they are 80. Good luck on that one. ;)

4. WorldWide Telescope

This is an awesome program put out by Microsoft. I am going to keep the description for this program simple. Basically you can see a real map of the nightsky full of real pictures. Think of like google earth but looking at the sky. See a galaxy that's in the sky that you like? Find it on this program and zoom in to find some closeup photos of the galaxy from the Hubble Telescope. If you have any kind of interest in Astronomy, download this!

5. MyHeritage Family Tree Builder

This is a GREAT program for building your family tree. I absolutely love this program and I've been using it for awhile now. I have imported many GEDCOM databases into a giant database for my family tree. I have thousands and thousands of distant relatives listed on it. How am I related to some relative that lived 200 years ago across the country? This program will tell me just that and the complete line of how exactly we are related. Very very cool. Failing to pay attention to these factors will dramatically hinder rehabilitation success.

Principle #1: Most programs designed to help offenders change their behavior are based on traditional educational strategies.

Examine the classic drug campaign, "Just say no." It speaks to those who see "no" as a viable option. Nontraditional learners respond to "Just say no" with a resounding "How do you spell it?" In the same way, most cognitive restructuring and life-skills programs utilize traditional educational paraphernalia such as overhead projectors and transparencies.

Many are based on a lecture format with slight variations on the old theme of teacher talks while student listens or student talks while everyone else listens. This "one versus everybody" approach rarely generates the personal involvement necessary to create an intrinsic bond with the material or skills being taught.

Principle #2: Skill-based programs must provide a balanced educational approach.

In education, as well as corrections, we keep getting ourselves caught in a cyclic time warp. We are presently entering the period where we are beginning to reuse the failed programs and philosophies of the 1960s. We have witnessed the staggering increases in crime during our more recent "lock 'em up" period and therefore many are looking elsewhere for answers.

Ways should be found to make it less rewarding for them to disrupt the process so that those who wish to apply themselves can become the real winners. We spend entirely too much time dealing with troublemakers at the expense of those who are looking for a positive way out of their present situation. As heartless as it may seem, it is often necessary to sacrifice the one for the needs of the whole.

Principle #4: External changes last only as long as a person in under supervision or in custody.

Programs look good when an individual feigns compliance to reduce the pressure placed on them. When the pressure to perform is lifted, all motivation to comply is also lost. Though it may look like a change has been made on the surface, in reality, nothing changes and the individual uses the same old con to get what they want.

These programs must generate deep personal involvement in order to crate the internal atmosphere necessary to motivate a lasting change. This approach must not be superficial; rather it must be deep-rooted and cause serious introspection and self-examination.

Principle #5: Lasting change is internal.

Programs that generate this serious introspection and self-examination can create internal change. This type of change is difficult to achieve but it is wonderful to witness. It is when the lights turn on and a person realized they have the ability to open up new worlds of personal discovery. Witnessing this type of intrinsic change is often the goal of individuals who have chosen this profession. It need not to happen so rarely and can be greatly enhanced by making sure that these then factors are considered carefully before implementing a cognitive/life-skills program.

I'm sure that stopping those educational programs will save our government few bucks, but the question we should ask ourselves if eventually stopping those educational program won't cost our society more.

Stopping those education programs will close the alternative our society is offering to drug dealing burglary and crime. Stopping those educational programs might lead us to deal with rise in crime rate. Fighting high crime rates will cost our society much more money than continuing to support those educational programs. Have you ever thought how much money we spent on protecting our house from burglars, have you thought how much money dealing with drug addicts and drug dealers cost our society.

It would be naive to think that continue supporting those educational programs will take our burglars and drug dealers from the streets and will send them to our schools and educational institutes, but imagine how much damage can be prevented if we could just create an educational alternative for a few burglars or drug dealers among our society. Imagine that instead of spending more money on locksmiths, locks, keys and security systems to protect our cars and houses, we will spend little money to create an alternative for those how deal with drug dealing and burglary.

How to Choose an Educational Program That Changes Criminal Behavior

There are many different names given to the cognitive restructuring and life-skills programs that are presently being adopted by the correctional educational world. Most, however, come from the same philosophical approach. They are typically based on the belief that criminal offenders have not learned to understand the consequences of their behaviors or how to make proper decisions, and/or how to take their place as a productive member of society. The hope for the success of this approach is genuine, but we must be careful that we do not jump after this approach without healthy skepticism and an analytical eye.

Those adopting these programs should be aware of several factors as they work to create a systematic program to educate offenders.

Factor 1: No program will reach every person.

Anytime someone claims to have a program that will reach everyone a red flag should immediately appear. People are not like machines to be fixed by using the proper tools and carefully following the instruction manual. Each individual has the will to choose what he or she will do in any given circumstance.

Educators are truly involved in the only profession where we cannot touch the thing we want to change or fix. Imagine the frustration of an auto mechanic if all he or she could use to tune up an engine were words. Their recidivism rates would be even higher than those we are criticized of having, if they had to depend on their ability to convince a car to want to change before their efforts were considered successful.

A program should be designed to motivate people to want to participate. To increase the likelihood of success, it must be based on educational principles that have proven to be most effective in meeting the learning style (personality) needs of offenders.

Factor 2: People who have never been involved in criminal behavior have a hard time understanding why an individual would commit a serious crime.

How can someone choose to hurt, maim, rob, rape, or kill another person? It seems unimaginable. Many in our field are constantly looking for an explanation for why a person would perpetrate these kinds of acts. "Surely it's because they are mentally ill or they were sexually or physically abused." There has to be some easy explanation. In the book Inside the Criminal Mind, Stanton Samenow shows that some people just choose to do these things because they like it.

These premeditated acts are based on values. Except for those that are mentally impaired, a values-based educational program will help separate those whose values are negative from those who have simply not learned the skills and the peace that comes from lining by their values.

A life-skills program must be heavily values-based in order to have the impact necessary to force people to face the truth about themselves. It cannot, however, exist to merely dictate values. It must create an atmosphere for individuals to own and examine their own values to determine how well they serve each individual.

Factor 3: Some people commit crimes because they like it.

This is an ugly piece of truth about human behavior. Offenders who have negative values will not get much from a life-skills program. Some have identified these individuals as being amoral or psychopathic. We spend too much time trying to work with these individuals when it would be in their and the public's best interest if they were just kept out of circulation.

Factor 4: No program, no matter how well designed, will help a person who is not sincerely committed to changing their life.

There's an old joke that goes something like this: "How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?" The answer is: "One, but the light bulb has to want to change." It is true here. As mentioned before, a successful program must have the ability to draw people in and create in them a desire to change. For the vast majority of offenders that means the use of a nontraditional educational approach. If an offender can see that a program will help them attain what he or she has determined to be most important, they become personally committed to the process. Then, and only then, does a program have the power to affect lasting change.

Factor 5: Most criminal offenders are nontraditional learners.

We know most offenders have failed in traditional educational settings. Many have never finished high school and have limited reading, writing, and math skills. They failed once when standard educational practices were used. Why do we think that using the same failed approach again will produce a different outcome?

Drastic times require drastic measures. The latest research is showing that nontraditional learners (Oranges and Greens) need to have information and new skills presented to them in ways that are consistent with the way they learn. The opposite is true of more traditional learners (Golds and Blues). They typically have better skills at translating and adapting facts and information to meet the needs of their learning style. Therefore, if we are committed to creating the highest possibility for their future success, it is essential that we mold our approached to meet the learning needs for the nontraditional learners who make up the majority of our populations.

Why More and More States Are Starting to Pay Greater Attention to Early Childhood Education Programs

Just a few years back, very few state education departments in the USA showed any willingness to devote their attention and resources to early childhood education programs. In those days, most of the attention would be focused on elementary, secondary and college education programs, leaving the early childhood system largely uncared for. The reasoning behind this was quite simple: that early childhood education didn't matter, and that resources would be better spent if devoted to the higher education systems (where output is usually more tangible and hence more quantifiable).

Fast forward to today, and we see more and states devoting considerable resources and attention to the early childhood education system. There are a number of ways through which this is manifesting. We are, for instance, seeing more and more childhood education centers being built in low income areas, to encourage parents who wouldn't otherwise put their children through ECD to do so. And supervision for early child educators, even those not in the government payroll, is being tightened, to ensure that it is a quality education they are giving kids. In many states, we are increasingly seeing people aspiring to become early child educators being put through licensing processes. And more often than not, one of the conditions for licensure is that the person must have a good understanding of early education techniques - with quite a good number requiring aspiring ECD teachers to have degrees in the discipline.
So, the question that comes up is as to why more and more governments are paying closer attention to early childhood education.

Would you go to a doctor, mechanic, or even a hairdresser that does not keep up on what's new in their field? I don't think so.

My sister is a hairdresser. She gets magazines and books all the time with the latest hairstyles and new techniques. She reads books all the time to improve her people skills, marketing, etc. She even gets DVDs sent to her monthly so she can watch the new haircuts being done.

She does not look at the expense. She considers everything an investment. An investment in herself and in her business. She said one haircut or one new customer will more than pay for a CD or DVD, or even a book.

I consider the personal development and leadership program we are involved in the best investment I can possibly make in myself. I also get CDs and other books every month for spiritual growth from other sources.
