Our children will be returning to days of regimented learning when they return to school next week. Unlike previous years, Lela won't be learning Mandarain, Spanish, theater or knitting. After school, she'll probably walk home, perhaps with friends from her neighborhood, and play and relax.

During the last twenty years, our kids have been robbed of at least eight hours of leisurely, spontaneous and unstructured play time every week. Compared to children from sixty years ago, it's fairly obvious that our children's ability to regulate their own behavior, control their impulses and understand their emotions is much worse. Studies have shown an alarming trend in self-regulation; our five-year-olds behave like 1940's three-year-olds, and our seven-year-olds have the same emotional capacity as five-year-olds from that same period.

Unstructured recreation, led by children, add to a child's emotional health, as well as their social, physical and intellectual skills. Unstructured play can teach children to successfully work in groups, as well as how to negotiate, resolve conflicts, share, speak up, and regulate their own behavior and emotions. Another study has revealed that children who attend traditional, academic preschools do not have an educational advantage in reading or math over children who attended preschools that focused on play - but they did have elevated test anxiety, decreased creativity, and more negative feelings about school than children who attended play-based preschools.

By allowing your children to lead their own play, and not questioning the roles that they assume or the structure of their games, we don't have to worry about dominating their play experiences. Unless your children are being unfriendly, don't attempt to correct their methods of play. Remove yourself from the immediate situation if you find yourself expressing frustration or disdain for the ways that your children choose to play, and allow your child the free play time. It is important to let them lead, and still spend time doing things that you both enjoy.

In my personal experience, rough-housing with my kids really increases our connection. I tend to skip participating in their make-believe play, because it's difficult for me to enjoy, and I become bored. History doesn't show us many examples of parents playing with their children, and even 75% of the world would find it unnatural for a child and parent to play together on the floor. Once your kids reach the age of four or five, it's completely normal for parents to step back from their children's play and let them control it for themselves. This is how children learn to get along with their peers, and how to entertain themselves. A kid with an imaginary friend isn't troubled or crazy; actually, studies have shown that these kids are more apt to interact, laugh and smile in social situations.

By projecting their own personalities and interacting with plush creatures with pretend personalities, kids develop the necessary skills to focus on their relationships with other kids. Pretend play with a group of children can stimulate intellectual and social skills in children, which subsequently helps them in school. 30 minutes is the minimum amount of time that kids should play. It's even better to let this play last several hours. We're not doing what we should as a society by allowing unmoderated play disappear from out children's lives; we value play less because of academics that take over our children's lives, but we need to protect and implement play for all of our children.

My friend Richard is a Licensed Practical Nurse who recently decided he wanted to go back and earn his RN degree and pursue more challenging, specialized fields in the nursing arena. To do this he wanted to get his Masters in Nursing but like most of us he couldn't afford to quit his job and go back to school full time. Instead, he turned to online programs and is now on his way to obtaining his goal while working full time.

Nursing programs, environmental research, special needs, and arts students have something in common. They are a few of the beneficiaries of grants that have been provided this year to colleges and universities. Students might not feel all of the effects of grants directly. However, millions of dollars in grant money has this year benefited institutes of higher learning; initiatives that often involve students. A few of these grants and initiatives include:

Grace College: This Winona Lake, Indiana, college has received a $5 million National Science Foundation grant. The grant money is to be applied to researching the effects of climate change on Great Lakes water quality. The money is to be provided to Grace College in yearly installments of $75,000 over the course of five years, according to Dr. Nate Bosch, an environmental biology professor and director of Kosciusko Lakes and Streams, a Grace College community water quality program.

Harding University: This Searcy, Arizona, university has received $3,500 grant from a major insurance company. The funds, awarded to Harding' Cannon-Clary College of Education and the Arkansas Teachers for National Board Certification, is to be applied to a Harding University hosted Arkansas Teachers for National Board Certification conference that's scheduled for January 2011. It's to help pay for events, as well as keynote speaker Dr. Jerry Parks, a middle school teacher of social studies who was inducted into the Teacher Hall of Fame in 2009.

Kent State University: This Kent, Ohio, university has received a $1 million US Department of Energy grant. These funds is to be dispersed over the course of three years. It's to benefit studies related to the storage and release of carbons.

Loyola University: This New Orleans, Louisiana, university has received a $1 million-plus Health Resources and Services Administration grant. Issued to benefit a new nursing degree by paying in part for the faculty and staff needed to run it. Loyola University plans to launch the online degree, which is a doctor of nursing, in 2013.

Marygrove College: This Detroit, Michigan, college has received a $20,000 Erb Foundation grant. Student participation in an Institute of Music and Dance at Marygrove College will benefit from this award. Provided to Marygrove College in two $10,000 annual installments, the monies are to pay for scholarships for students participating in the school's art, dance, music and theater classes.

Marylhurst University: This Marylhurst, Oregon, university has received a $75,000 Oregon Community Foundation grant. The money, provided through the foundation's Sande Emmy Fund, is to benefit a music therapy program. Marylhurst University students as part of what's known as Creative Arts Therapies for Kids, or CATs 4 Kids, work with special needs children.

Grants that are provided to colleges and universities can go a long way not only toward helping students who study there, but toward helping the community at large. Some might feel the immediate benefits in their ability to participate in college and university studies. In the long-term, grants such as these might benefit the environment, the health of others and more.

Normally, when students think of awarded money for school it's after they've done a search for online grant and scholarship funds that might apply to their personal needs. If your child has special needs or a disability, special education may help your child succeed in school and in life. However, many parents fear that their child will be singled out for special education classes in a room separate from their classmates, so they avoid seeking out special education arrangements.

While this was the case at one time, current special education laws require schools to provide an educational environment that is as unrestrictive and equal for all children as possible.

Are you unsure whether your child qualifies for special education? Do you wonder if special education services would help your child succeed in school? The definitions of eligible disabilities have been greatly expanded to include learning disabilities and emotional challenges as well as physical disabilities.

Some of these definitions are set by the states, and the federal government decides some. Regardless of what type of disability your child has, special education is the best way to ensure that your child is getting the education that your child deserves.

Without special education services, your child may be at a disadvantage. Even with a caring and patient teacher, many children find themselves unable to keep up with their peers in the classroom.

Setting out a clear and fair special education plan will give you, your child and the school the assurance that appropriate measures are being taken on your child's behalf in the classroom. These may include additional time with a teacher or special education facilitator, physical accommodations, or any other reasonable accommodation that the school is able to offer.

When seeking special education arrangements for your child, your first step will be to obtain an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for him. An IEP should be developed for each child with any disability and is the single most important piece of documentation in your quest for equal education for your child. It outlines goals and objectives for the student, along with a description of which accommodations will be necessary to facilitate those objectives.

The IEP process begins when you or your child's teacher notice that the child is struggling in school. The concerned party will request a referral for special education services, which typically will result in an evaluation by a committee comprised of school faculty and you. The evaluation will determine whether your child's disabilities interfere with his educational experience. If so, an IEP will be developed.

When the IEP is in place, your child will have access to the special education services covered by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Under IDEA, your child is entitled to an education equivalent to that of a child without disabilities in the least restrictive environment possible.

The Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) mandate is the result of many years of studies. The conclusion of these studies was that special needs children are better served in the classroom with their peers than in a segregated classroom environment. The practices of pull-out programs, separate "special-ed" rooms, and the stigma of being a "special-ed kid" have changed radically in the past decade.

Children are now encouraged to flourish first in the regular classroom, with accommodations and modifications if necessary. If it becomes clear that this setup is not in the best interest of the child, the school or the parent may request a re-evaluation of the situation.

Recent studies have proven beyond a doubt that children with disabilities have more opportunities to thrive when they are educated in the same environment as non-disabled children. Observing and interacting with other children helps students with disabilities to maintain a sense of normalcy and develop their social skills. An inclusive classroom, one that includes special needs and non-special needs students, can also help the non-special needs students develop valuable social skills.

By taking down the barriers between disabled students and non-disabled students, IDEA has made the special education environment a more nurturing and beneficial place for your child to receive the education your child is entitled to. There is no longer any need to be nervous about the negative impact that special education will have on your child because the process has been refined to be as positive as possible.

The special education environment found in schools today is one that provides an improved learning experience for your child. With the help of supplemental support staff and special training for classroom teachers, your child's school can provide the type of environment that makes it possible for him to thrive and to achieve all that your child is capable of achieving.

Students had to attend classes at a university to get credit once upon a time. If you had a time conflict, or the university was far away, you missed out. Now distance education has changed all of this. Distance education is also sometimes called distance learning, and it involves getting educational materials to students who aren't physically attending a course. The education is offered via technology or correspondence.

Students in far-flung corners of the globe can now get an education thanks to distance learning. In fact, the University of South Africa, established in 1946, is one of the oldest distance education universities.

Individual distance education classes and programs have been around for far longer. Distance education can be traced back to Sir Issac Pitman, who also invented shorthand. Pittman thought it might be useful to offer courses via the mail. The idea was adapted by the University of Chicago in the early 1900s; they began what is likely the first department for correspondence courses. It was not the last such department. The idea caught on and other universities followed suit.

There were only a few countries where distance learning was a major component of the educational system, however, until 1969. This changed when the United Kingdom started the Open University. This changed distance education radically and encouraged other similar universities to be founded.

Today, we have distance education that would have seemed like a dream to these earlier departments. Students can get materials via podcast, webcast, videoconferencing, satellite broadcast, email, CD-ROM, and broadband to name just a few.

We can even use a virtual classroom to deliver materials. This means that a teacher gives a lecture in one classroom and it is broadcast via teleconference to students in other classrooms as well. Students benefit from remote technology in many ways. They can also get online video materials and course materials, chat with tutors online, email instructors, and so on.

Distance learning programs are thriving in the United States. You can find them now in nonprofit and for-profit businesses of both private and public sectors.

It is still quite expensive to offer distance learning, however. Still, with technology becoming more reasonable over time, the possibilities for this type of learning to be used more widely are quite good.

The old thinking used to be that college education could only occur on an accredited four-year campus. Then came a proliferation of correspondence schools and alternative universities. Now, an emerging campus for the 21st century is online education.

Say someone is looking for radiology technician schools they can attend online (such schools do exist). A prospective student would want to know: which of these schools are up on the latest technologies; which ones actually have doctors or other medical professionals on staff rather than would-be professors who were delivering pizzas a few weeks before; and which of the schools provide a realistic chance at a job in health care or least a reasonable career search when all the classes are done. After all, an education is a career finder, perhaps as much as anything else. Are you the parent of a young child with autism that thinks that your child needs an applied behavioral analysis (ABA)program? Are you the parent of a child with dyslexia or other learning disabilities who thinks that your child needs an Orton-Gillingham Based multisensory reading program? Would you like to learn how to advocate for these particular methodologies for your child? This article will discuss what methodology means, and information that you can use to advocate for the appropriate methodology for your child.

Methodology means the specific curriculum or program that special education personnel are going to use, to teach your child. Some of the most popular methodologies for teaching children are ABA (for children with autism) or an Orton-Gillingham based multisensory reading program for children with dyslexia or other reading disabilities.

Many special education personnel continue to tell parents that they have no right to tell them what methodology to use. Below are 4 points that you can make with school personnel to get the methodology that your child needs in order to benefit from their education.

1. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004 states under 300.26 that: special education means specially designed instruction means adapting as appropriate to the needs of the eligible child . . .the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction.

This section is one of the most important clarifications in the IDEA law. It
gives parents the right to discuss the content, methodology and delivery of education to their child. The discussion of methodology is important for all children but especially those children with autism or language based learning disabilities.

2. In a recent court case entitled KL vs. Mercer Island School District found that: The particular teaching methodology that will be used. . .will need to be discussed at the IEP meeting and incorporated into the student's IEP.

3. Another court case the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois discussed methodology in the case of TH vs. Palatine School District. The court held that the school's argument that it had the right to choose methodology was not valid since the school district had no methodology. The US Supreme Court decision in Rowley could only apply if the school had chosen and implemented a methodology calculated to allow the child to make meaningful progress.

4. There is no legal basis for school districts decision to not discuss or specify the methodology in a child's IEP! School districts position on this contradicts common sense. IDEA regulations require that the IEP should include related services and supplementary aids and supports to be provided to the child, and a statement of the program, modifications or supports. It is mind blowing that school districts take the position that it should specify the supports and modifications which may be dependent on the methodology, but not specify the methodology.

If you feel that your child needs a particular methodology in order to benefit from their education, bring it up at an IEP meeting. If the IEP team feels that they do not have to put the methodology in your child's IEP, bring up all of the 4 points above! Put special emphasis on the wording of IDEA which does include the word methodologies. You may have to fight for a particular methodology that your child needs, but it will be well worth it!

First off the amount of Universities in West Virginia is astounding. You will find Masters Degree programs in cities ranging anywhere from Philippi, WV, all the way to Buckhannon, WV. There really is no best way to decide on what college is right for you and I felt like it was something left up to the reader to decide for themselves. There are 4 different mindsets people use to make decisions like these, and in this article I really have no way to try and persuade you to go to any one school. So with that being said lets get into what schools are in the West Virginia area and then maybe later on you will have a better idea on where you think would be a good place to get educated.

Starting from A to Z and this certainly isn't a complete list of schools, but from the research I have gathered at this time it seems to be a nice start:

First there is the Alderson Broaddus College, and they are located in the city of Philippi WV. They provide students with a Masters Degree who are interested in majors like: English, History, Math, and Science. There is the Bethany College and there located in the city of Bethany WV. Bethany only offers Arts majors.

Next is the University of Concord located in Athens WV. Concord offers a wide range of Masters education options like:

Admin, Adult Education or Higher, Counseling or Psych, Social Studies or History, Science, Health and/ Physical Education, Special Ed, and Reading.

Fairmont State University located in Fairmont, WV is a huge education provider and the list is so extensive that I am pretty sure it covers any major you are interested in majoring in.

Than there is Marshall University located in Huntington WV. Marshall is mainly a Business, Psychology, Reading, and Special Education provider.

Salem International University located in Salem, WV is a Masters Degree School with programs for: Masters in Education, and Masters in Business Administration.

Next we have Shepherd University and they are stationed in the city of Shepherdstown. Shepherd offers programs in everything you can think of lol or just about.

West Liberty University is located in the city of West Liberty what do you know the name of the city. West Liberty offers a single master program for Instructional Technology.

West Virginia University is located in Morgantown and offers master degree programs in almost every major you can think of.

West Virginia Wesleyan College is located in Buckhannon WV. They offer English, History, Math, Science, Special Ed, Physcial Ed.

Students that want to become attorneys need to successfully complete the correct amount of schooling. Students have to complete a specific level of education in order to practice law. Online colleges and universities offer students numerous opportunities to step into careers.

The first thing that needs to be completed in order to enter law school is a bachelor's degree program. Students can complete a program in any field they desire. Law schools recommend taking some pre-law or paralegal courses to prepare students for training inside their chosen law program. Once a bachelor's degree is completed students can enter law school. The Law School Admissions Test has to be passed in order to start education.

A Juris Doctor degree is what allows students to step into the industry. Programs typically last three years and train students in all foundational areas of law. Elective courses are often taken to create a personalized degree so students can work in their desired area of law. Many students combine their degree with another master's degree level program in a specific area of law, which makes training at least two to four years longer. Common courses taken inside a Juris Doctor degree program may include:

Upon completion of a program students are required to pass a bar exam to legally practice law. For online students this is extremely important because the American Bar Association does not accredit online schools. Do you have a child with autism that is receiving special education services? Did you know that Applied Behavioral Analysis, is the research based educational treatment, for autism? Did you know that if ABA starts at age 3 by age 7 many children are able to be mainstreamed, have a more productive life, and save society money? Would you like to know, how to avoid a "fake" ABA program that will not educationally benefit your child? This article will discuss several ways to avoid, agreeing to an ABA program, that is not being done in a correct manner, to the detriment of your child.

1. Avoid a fake program, by making sure that any program that special education personnel want to use for your child, is developed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The professional should have a masters or a doctorate degree; and ask for written proof of this. The person also must have over one hundred hours of specific course work and thousands of hours of supervised experience. The program is individualized for each child with autism, and will not be effective if it is not developed by a trained person.

2. Avoid a fake program, by making sure that the professional person that develops the program also has experience working with children with autism. The program will be more effective, if the professional person developing it, has experience working with many children with different types of autism.

3. Avoid a fake program, by ensuring that the ratio is 1-1; which is 1 adult to 1 child; any other ratio is not the correct way to do the program. Many schools say they have ABA programs, but the ratios are 4 students to 1 adult; not the way ABA is carried out. If the program is not done on a 1 to 1 basis, your child will not be getting the most benefit from the program.

4. Avoid a fake program, by ensuring that your child receives a minimum of 25 hours per week or a maximum of 40 hours per week. Many disability organizations estimate that a 40 hour week costs approximately $50,000 a year per child. If your school district wants to give your child 2 hours of ABA a day, tell them that ABA must be given a minimum of 25 hours a week, and you will accept no less. One way that special education personnel try and save money, is to offer the appropriate interventions, but not for the effective amount of time.

5. Avoid a fake program, by making sure that the instruction uses discrete trial training, which is the main component of the program.

6. Avoid a fake program, by making sure that the teacher assistant that is carrying out the program, has received extensive training from a professional with a Masters or Doctorate in ABA; and works under the supervision of the professional. The professional, should also meet with the teacher's assistant on a regular basis, to see how the child is progressing, and if the program needs to be changed.

Why is it important to make sure that the ABA program your child receives will bring the maximum benefit? A study that was done in 1998 Entitled: Cost benefit estimates for early intensive behavioral intervention for young children with autism shows that If a child receives ABA between the ages of 2 and school entry the cost savings range from $187,000 to $203,000 per child for ages 3-21. Also the cost savings is from $656,000 to$1,082,000 per child from ages 3-55 years.

It is not only in your child's best interest to receive an appropriately developed ABA program, but it is in societies also. Advocate for an effective program that is going to benefit your child, for the rest of their life.

A solid Music Education program trains its students in understanding Music Theory. Music Theory is important because it is the key to analyzing music and good musicians should have this ability. Understanding the structure of music is laying the foundation for new music to be created. For instance, knowing the major and minor scales, on which music of the Western Hemisphere is based, helps students to understand the make-up of a composition which can lead students to compose their own music.

In order to play an instrument or sing, there are basic skills all music students must know. One particular skill is playing or singing major and minor scales. In order to do this, the key signature of each scale must be known. The following is a diagram that illustrates the major keys that contain sharps. This diagram provides students with a method of learning the number of sharps in a key in numerical order.

Major Keys with Sharps (black keys to the right of the note - for example: "F" sharp (#) is the very next black key on the right of "F")

• C Major: 0 Sharps
• G Major: 1 Sharp - F#
• D Major: 2 Sharps - F#, C#
• A Major: 3 Sharps - F#, C#, G#
• E Major: 4 Sharps - F#, C#, G#, D#
• B Major: 5 Sharps - F#, C#, G#, D#, A#
• F# Major: 6 Sharps - F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#
• C# Major: 7 Sharps - F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B#

By reading this diagram in order, students will see the close relationship one key has with the next key. For instance, "C" major, having no sharps or flats, is closely related to "G" major since "G" major has only one sharp. However, "C" major is not closely related to "E" major because "E" major has four sharps. Knowing the relationship between keys is important for ear training purposes so students can hear as well as see how music is structured and then progresses into new music.

Once the major keys that contain sharps are learned, then the major scales with sharps can be learned vocally or on an instrument. Next, the major keys and scales that contain flats, the minor keys and scales that contain sharps then the minor keys and scales that contain flats should be introduced in that order.
